Overview

This Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") describes what you may and may not do with Verity. By using Verity, you agree to this AUP. Violations may result in suspension or termination of your account.

This AUP is incorporated into and forms part of Verity's Terms of Service.

Capitalized terms used but not defined here have the meanings given in the Terms of Service.

Definitions for terms used here (Service, Your Content, Sub-processor, etc.) are in /legal/definitions. Doc-specific terms (PHI, Work Product, etc.) remain defined inline.

1. Purpose

Verity is a voice-to-text productivity tool. It produces a written record of what you said, optionally polished by a language model. You are responsible for how you use it.

Verity is not a medical device, clinical decision support system, diagnostic tool, legal advice service, financial advice service, or safety-critical system. Its outputs may contain errors. Read and verify any transcript before relying on it in a context where accuracy matters.

2. Not a Substitute for Professional Judgment

Verity produces automated transcriptions and text transformations. These outputs:

• May be inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading
• Do not constitute legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice
• Must not be relied upon as a substitute for the independent judgment of a qualified professional

You are solely responsible for reviewing, verifying, and taking responsibility for any output produced by Verity before acting on it.

3. Permitted Recording Scope — Sole-User Only

Verity is a personal dictation and voice-to-text tool intended exclusively for recording your own voice. You may only use Verity to capture audio of yourself — your own dictation, notes, or spoken thoughts. Recording the voice of any other person, whether in a conversation, meeting, call, phone call, or any other setting, is prohibited regardless of whether that person has consented.

This restriction eliminates Verity's applicability to multi-party all-party-consent recording laws (e.g. California Penal Code §632 and equivalent statutes). If you attempt to use Verity to record others, you do so in violation of these Terms, solely at your own risk and liability, and Verity Software Inc. bears no responsibility for any resulting legal consequences.

Prohibited under this section (also enumerated in §4): Recording any audio that captures the voice or speech of a person other than yourself.

4. Prohibited Uses

You must not use Verity to do any of the following.

4.1 Illegal and harmful activities — zero-tolerance red lines

You will not use the Service to create, store, process, transmit, generate, transcribe, or otherwise handle:

(a) Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) or any content that sexually exploits, sexualizes, grooms, or endangers a person under 18, including AI-generated or computer-modified depictions. Verity will report apparent CSAM to the U.S. National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) as required by 18 U.S.C. §2258A, and to Canadian authorities under the Act respecting the mandatory reporting of Internet child pornography by persons who provide an Internet service (S.C. 2011, c. 4), and will preserve evidence as required by law.

(b) Non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) — including "revenge porn," sexual deepfakes, or any sexually explicit depiction of an identifiable person created or shared without that person's knowing consent.

(c) Terrorist content or violent extremism — content that incites, glorifies, provides instructions for, recruits for, or finances terrorism or violent extremism. This includes content covered by EU Regulation 2021/784 (TERREG), the UK Terrorism Act 2000/2006, and Part II.1 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

(d) Incitement or threats of violence — content that incites or threatens imminent violence against any person or group, or that promotes self-harm or suicide.

(e) Cruelty to animals, including bestiality.

(f) Doxxing — publishing private identifying information (home address, government ID, financial accounts) of any person without consent.

These prohibitions are absolute. A violation is grounds for immediate termination without notice, preservation of evidence, and report to competent authorities.

You also must not use the Service to:

• Violate any applicable law or regulation
• Record, transcribe, or process the voice or audio of any person other than yourself (see §3 — Verity is sole-user only)
• Facilitate harassment, stalking, or surveillance of any individual
• Produce or distribute content that is defamatory, obscene, or constitutes hate speech under applicable law

4.2 Safety-critical contexts

You will not use Verity output to make or inform decisions in aviation, nuclear, transportation, life-support, automated medication administration, or other safety-critical systems, or in any context where an unverified transcription error could directly cause death, bodily injury, or significant property damage.

4.3 Competitive and intellectual property violations

• Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract Verity's source code, models, or proprietary algorithms.
• Combine Verity Model Outputs (as defined in ToS §5.1) with Your Content or any third-party data to develop, train, or improve a competing speech-to-text or AI product, except with Verity's prior written permission.
• Resell, sublicense, or provide access to the Service to third parties without Verity's prior written permission.
• Use the "Verity" name, logo, or trademarks in a manner that suggests endorsement, partnership, or affiliation with Verity Software Inc. without prior written permission, or in any manner inconsistent with the brand-usage guidelines at /legal/trademark.

4.4 Minors

Verity is not intended for use by individuals under 16. You may not:

(a) Create an account if you are under 16, except through the parental-consent flow Verity provides for users aged 13–15 (verifiable consent from a parent or legal guardian is required before such an account becomes active); (b) Create or operate an account on behalf of a minor under 13; (c) Use the Service to record or transcribe audio of children under 13 without prior verifiable parental consent (aligned with COPPA, 16 CFR Part 312); (d) Process voice recordings of minors as biometric identifiers under Illinois BIPA (740 ILCS 14/), Texas CUBI (Tex. Bus. & Com. Code §503.001), or Washington H.B. 1493 without separate written opt-in consent from the parent or guardian. Verity's biometric data retention and destruction schedule is set out in §6.6 Biometric Data Retention and Destruction Policy; (e) In Quebec, process the personal information of a minor under 14 without parental consent (Law 25 §4.2).

The minimum-age floor of 16 is set by Verity's Terms of Service §3 and applies regardless of the age of majority in your jurisdiction.

4.5 Model abuse and AI misuse

You will not use the Service to:

• Impersonate, deceive, or defraud any person, including by generating speech or text in another person's voice or style without their consent;
• Generate election misinformation, political disinformation, or content designed to manipulate democratic processes;
• Make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects on individuals (employment, credit, insurance, housing, immigration, criminal-justice) without meaningful human review (aligned with EU AI Act Art. 6 high-risk system principles);
• Jailbreak, prompt-inject, or otherwise attempt to circumvent the safety controls of Verity's language models, or to use other users' content as injected prompts;
• Generate output that, if produced directly by a user, would breach §4.1.

4.6 Account and system integrity

• Share your account credentials or allow others to use your account.
• Create duplicate or fraudulent accounts.
• Circumvent, disable, or interfere with any security, access control, or payment mechanism.
• Attempt unauthorized access to Verity's systems, infrastructure, or other users' data.

4.7 Automated and bulk abuse

• Scrape, crawl, or systematically extract data from Verity beyond ordinary individual use.
• Use automated scripts or bots to interact with Verity in a manner that places unreasonable load on the Service, as determined by Verity acting reasonably and consistently with the fair-use schedule below.

Fair-use schedule (effective at launch):

Accounts that consistently exceed the free-tier weekly budget through automated or scripted means, or that place unreasonable load on the Service regardless of plan, are subject to throttling or suspension under §6.

5. Embargoed Countries and Sanctioned Persons

You must not use the Service if you are located in, ordinarily resident in, or acting on behalf of any country, region, or person subject to comprehensive economic sanctions or trade embargoes under the laws of Canada (Special Economic Measures Act, Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act), the United States (OFAC-administered programs, including Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons), the European Union, or the United Kingdom.

You represent and warrant on each use of the Service that you are not such a person and are not located in such a region. This restriction mirrors the user warranty in the Terms of Service. Breach of this section is grounds for immediate termination under §6.1 Tier A.

6. Enforcement

Verity Software Inc. enforces this AUP on a report-driven basis. Verity does not proactively monitor the content of user transcripts. Verity may, however:

• Investigate any reported or apparent violation;
• Use industry-standard hash-matching tools (e.g. PhotoDNA, GIFCT hash sets) to detect §4.1(a)–(c) content where lawful;
• Cooperate with law enforcement under valid legal process;
• Seek damages or other remedies for violations that cause harm to Verity or third parties.

6.1 Enforcement tiers

Verity uses a graduated response keyed to severity:

• Tier A — Immediate suspension or termination, without prior notice. Reserved for §4.1 zero-tolerance red lines (CSAM, NCII, terrorism, imminent threat of violence), §5 sanctions hits, legally compelled action (court order, valid law-enforcement request), or active security threats (account compromise, malware distribution). Notice and a statement of reasons follow within 5 business days where lawful.
• Tier B — Notice and 7-day suspension. For repeat or non-trivial breaches that are not zero-tolerance (e.g. confirmed missing recording consent in a single-party-consent jurisdiction, exceeding API rate limits, minor §5 prohibited use). Verity will notify you by email at the address on file, identify the alleged breach, and the 7-day suspension begins on notice. A second offense within 12 months may escalate to a 30-day suspension; a third may result in termination.
• Tier C — Warning. For first-time minor or borderline conduct. You are informed and educated; no account action is taken.

6.2 Statement of reasons

When Verity restricts content, suspends, terminates, or limits an account on AUP grounds, Verity will provide you a clear and specific statement of reasons including: (i) the facts and circumstances relied on, (ii) whether the decision used automated or human means, (iii) the AUP clause and/or law relied on, (iv) the duration and territorial scope of the restriction, and (v) information on available redress (internal appeal under §6.3 and judicial recourse).

6.3 Appeals

If your account is suspended, terminated, or restricted, you may appeal within 14 days of the statement of reasons by emailing [email protected] with: (a) the case reference, (b) the basis for the appeal (factual error, mitigating circumstance, lawful conduct), and (c) any supporting evidence. Verity will decide appeals within 15 business days, in a non-discriminatory, diligent, and objective manner, and will not rely solely on automated means. Where the appeal succeeds, Verity will reverse the decision without undue delay; where it fails, Verity will provide a substantive written response.

6.4 Notice

All notices Verity sends you under this AUP — including statements of reasons, suspension notices, and termination notices — will be sent by email to the address most recently associated with your account. It is your responsibility to keep that address current.

6.5 Data preservation during enforcement

Upon suspension under Tier A or Tier B, Verity will preserve your transcripts and account data for 90 days (or longer if required by law) so that you can appeal and, where appropriate, export your data. After that window, retained data is purged in accordance with the retention schedule referenced in the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

6.6 Biometric Data Retention and Destruction Policy

This section constitutes Verity's publicly available written policy regarding the retention and destruction of biometric data, as required by the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (740 ILCS 14/15(a)), the Texas Capture or Use of Biometric Identifier Act (Tex. Bus. & Com. Code §503.001), and Washington H.B. 1493.

Biometric data collected. Verity processes your voice recordings to produce transcripts. Voice recordings and any derived voiceprints constitute biometric data. Verity does not use biometric data for identification, surveillance, or profiling — only for transcription and polish.

Retention schedule.

Destruction procedures. When biometric data reaches the end of its retention period (or upon your deletion request), Verity permanently and irreversibly deletes the data from all primary storage systems. Backup copies are purged on the next rotation cycle (maximum 30 days after primary deletion). No biometric data survives beyond the retention periods above plus the 30-day backup rotation window.

Your rights. You may at any time:

• Withdraw consent — stop future biometric data collection by disabling recording in Settings or deleting your account. Previously collected biometric data is handled per the retention schedule above.
• Request deletion — request immediate deletion of all biometric data by emailing [email protected] or using the in-app Privacy Rights Portal. We delete within 30 days.
• Inspect — request a copy of the biometric data we hold about you (voice recordings and transcripts) via the Privacy Rights Portal or by emailing [email protected]. We respond within 30 days.
• Obtain information — request details about the categories of biometric data collected, the purposes of collection, and the retention schedule (all disclosed in this section and in our Privacy Policy §4).

No sale, lease, or trade. Verity does not sell, lease, trade, or otherwise profit from your biometric data. Biometric data is never shared with third parties except as required by valid legal process.

7. Reporting Channels

Verity will acknowledge reports to abuse@ within 5 business days and act on them in a timely, diligent, non-arbitrary, and objective manner. Anonymous reports concerning §4.1(a) are accepted; for all other categories, please include enough contact information for us to follow up.
